The last two years of podcasting have had one theme: familiar faces, brand new microphones. Comedians, athletes' families, and fashion designers have all launched shows from a standing start, and unlike the DIY boom of the 2010s, plenty have arrived backed by serious production money and video-first distribution from day one.
 

None of that guarantees an audience, though. What's actually broken through has less to do with who's behind the mic and more to do with whether the format lets them be genuinely themselves, whether that's oversharing about motherhood, psychoanalysing celebrities on a couch, or just being unmistakably funny for an hour a week.
